Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology at Knowle Battery, St Budeaux, Plymouth (SX 4630 5960), between January and December 2015. The watching brief covered all the ground works inside the battery, including the demolition of the existing school buildings, access, car parking and landscaping works. Excavation revealed further information regarding the layout of Knowle Battery, including the location and layout of the two northern expense magazines and the extent of the western gorge wall surviving below ground. The work has shown for the first time that Knowle battery may also have had a small flanking bastion. No structures associated with the battery were found along the eastern edge of the development. |
