Abstract:
Two trenches were to be positioned in advance of construction of a single dwelling on land formerly used as a paddock and orchard. This consisted of a 15m by 1,60m trench across the new dwellings footprint and another shorter 10 metre trench across the driveway parallel to Farthing Lane. The 10 metre trench had to be abandoned to due extensive thick tree rooting due its location below the canopy of an old Ash tree. No second trench was placed because of the confined area. The 15 metre trench was excavated in the original position. The evaluation was undertaken due the site close proximity of a moated site with former manor house to the east at Curdworth Hall farm. There was a good possibility of archaeological remains dating from the Medieval period either associated with the moat or unconnected . The 15 metre trench proved positive for archaeological remains. A single post hole, ditch, and pit were identified. The pit contained large sherds of 12th to 14th century pottery with environmental analysis showing quantities of seeds related to bread. The pit most likely used as a rubbish pit. The single post suggesting remains of a structure, with the ditch possibly a property boundary plot ditch which could have fronted farthing Lane although the abandoned 10 metre trench could not show this. Further work on the site prior to the new dwelling should show further remains associated with the plot.
