Abstract: |
The watching brief was carried out during construction works for an extension to the rear of the historic building. It observed the excavation of foundation trenches for a building measuring c.8m x 3.5m. The archaeological remains of two pits, a probable well, a possible ditch and various made-ground deposits were recorded. These recorded remains appear to span the post-medieval period, potentially from the 16th century onwards, and are interpreted to relate to activities and amenities within the rear plot of the historic standing building on the Bell Street frontage. These remains were sealed by modern levelling layers probably related to the construction of an earlier, c.1800, extension to the rear of the property. |
