Abstract:
In April 2018 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried out an archaeological evaluation on land at White Horse Cottage, The Street, Rickinghall, Suffolk IP22 1EG (NGR TM 041 752; Figs. 1 - 2). The evaluation was undertaken in compliance with the initial requirements of a planning condition attached to planning approval for proposed construction of a new dwelling (Mid Suffolk Council Planning Approval DC/17/03950), based on the advice of Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service Conservation Team. The Suffolk Historic Environment Record (HER) notes that the site is an area of archaeological potential, within the historic medieval and post-medieval settlement core of the village. The medieval parish church and churchyard lie to the south west (HER RKN 021). The site comprises a yard of hardstanding to the south (rear) of the former White Horse Inn. The Grade II listed building dates back to around c.1600, and was extended in the 18th century, with alterations in more recent times including a rear extension in the 1980s. The evaluation revealed numerous late post-medieval and modern (18th - 19th century) pits. The pits were surprisingly high in number (14), dense and intercutting. They were likely associated with the former public house.
