Abstract: |
In May and July 2017, Cotswold Archaeology (CA) carried out an archaeological watching brief during the excavation of ground investigation test pits at Plot C2, Millbay, Plymouth. One test pit contained a silty clay layer, possibly representing a deposit associated with the Sourpool, a large area of marshland recorded in early documents and which was drained in the 16th century. A culvert was recorded within the site. This had been much rebuilt/repaired, with sections of the structure being built of masonry, brick, cast iron and concrete. The test pits generally contained modern made ground deposits to depth. Several structures were cut into these deposits; some of these structures were clearly late 20th century in date; others may also be modern, or post-medieval. |
