Abstract: |
A trench excavated on the site of a large outbuilding shown on 19th century maps close to the river Wandle to the NW of a former country house, now known as Carew Manor. The excavation exposed the lower part of the foundations of the north wall and an inward projecting stub wall, probably the footings of a large timber framed aisled barn. A second small trench exposed the NW corner of the building. The combined archaeological and documentary evidence suggests that the building was about 69m long by 11m wide. The very limited dating evidence was consistent with the barn having been erected or moved to the site between 1707 and 1727 when the landscape around the house was remodelled. This is, however, uncertain. The foundation rested directly on natural river gravel. |
