Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out by AC archaeology during groundworks associated with the construction of two dwellings on land at Holly House, Willand Road, Cullompton. The site lies at the northern extent of Cullompton and to the west of Willand Road. It comprises the southern portion of a plot previously occupied by the gardens of Holly House on what was a lawn (formally a tennis court) terraced into the hillslope with surrounding planted borders. A small quantity of unstratified post-medieval finds was collected during the monitoring. They included seven sherds of 19th to early 20th century pottery, a base fragment from a modern moulded light green transparent glass bottle and two pieces of undiagnostic ironworking slag. The groundworks demonstrated that much of the site had been previously landscaped, with this associated with the creation of the former tennis court that occupied the majority of the site. Intact soils were present around the perimeter of the site, which were overlain by dumped soils, presumably derived from landscaping works. |
