Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) at the request of a Private Client, during groundwork associated with the construction of a dwelling at Parklands, Stokenham, South Hams, Devon. This work was undertaken on from the 10th-14th August 2018 in accordance with a WSI drawn up in consultation with the Devon County Historic Environment Team. The site is a plot of land known as Parklands, previously occupied by a bungalow; built by the mid 1950s and served as a Post Office it was demolished in 2016. It is c.30m east, the Tradesman Arms Freehouse (MDV44967) and c.140 north-west of the Church of St Michael and All Saints/Angels (MDV8364), on the north side of the village green. No properties are shown on the site on the 1843 Tithe map for Stokenham; and the site (plot 595) is described as an orchard. The 1905 Ordnance Survey 2nd edition map shows the site as mostly empty, although the area appears to have two sheds. Earlier features associated with activity in this historic core of Stokenham may have been present on the site. The site is on a street of 7 Grade II Listed properties including the pub and the neighbouring Old Library and Whitmore Cottage (MDV90182). Stokenham was first recorded in the late 12th/early 13th century. The site is within the Stokenham Conservation Area. Four other archaeological based surveys have been conducted east and south of the site within the Conservation Area (EDV1570, EDV1579, EDV4454 and EDV4477). In these, medieval buildings with ditches were recorded to the south, but east of the site in a similar location to the site no significant archaeological deposits or features were identified. |
