Abstract:
A community excavation undertaken as part of the Isle of Axholme and Hatfield Chase Landscape Project (IoAHCLP) focussed on the reputed site of the medieval manor of the Mowbray family at Vinegarth, Epworth. Previous investigations were undertaken in the 1970s, but the full extent of the site with regards to its form, function and date are unknown. Geophysical surveys undertaken in 2017 within the fields to the south of the church revealed anomalies that could relate to walls comparable to those excavated in the 1970s. Two trenches were excavated within this area to investigate these possible features, and nine test pits were excavated within a wider area. Excavation was undertaken with the assistance of local community volunteers, who were trained in excavation and recording techniques throughout the project. The work revealed evidence of medieval activity across the site, particularly focused around Trench 1 and Test Pits 1-2. No clear structures of medieval date were recorded, but a feature in Trench 1 may have been a robbed wall foundation. Most test pits were terminated at 0.5m and did not reach a sufficient depth to confirm the presence of medieval deposits. Finds included a reasonably large, well-preserved animal bone assemblage including significant quantities of fallow deer alongside domestic animals. Pottery ranged from early medieval to modern in date, as did ceramic building material. More unusual artefacts included needles, a jet gaming die and probable coins.
