Abstract:
The site of Norbury Old Manor was owned from 1125 to the late 19th century by the Fitzherbert family, and formed their principal seat until 1649. A stone house was probably originally constructed in the mid- to late 13th century, then enlarged as a courtyard house in the early 14th century, with a major phase of rebuilding in the 15th century. After 1649, the house was reduced to a secondary seat and much of the medieval house was demolished and replaced by a brick-built house constructed around 1680, leased as a farm house from at least the 18th century. In 1872, the manor and estate were purchased by Samuel Clowes, who demolished some outbuildings and created a series of woodland walks within the grounds. The house was renovated in the 1960s-70s and bequeathed to the National Trust in 1987. Listed buildings on the site comprise the grade I listed manor house and grade II listed Stone Cottage> Other heritage assets identified include earthwork remains of possible quarries, an earthwork platform to the west of the house associated with an enclosure of at least mid-18th-century date, very faint ridge and furrow cultivation marks, and a former path to a bridge over Norbury Hollow. Features associated with woodland paths, the dismantled railway and possible historic woodland management were recorded. The nature, condition and significance of heritage assets has been described, and the landscape history of the survey area analysed. The report also includes recommendations for conservation management and further research.
