Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out by Oakford Archaeology (OA) in August 2017 during works at St Alban's, Beaworthy, Devon. The work comprised the monitoring of construction works associated with new drainage around the church. The works outside the church revealed the remains of an earlier foundation immediately to the east of the south porch. This has been interpreted as the remains of a narrow Norman south aisle. The external excavations further revealed elements of the extensive medieval and post-medieval graveyard to the north and south of the church. The trenching and closer analysis of the historic building fabric suggest that the work undertaken in 1871, although extensive, did not involve the complete rebuilding of the church but rather the wholesale replacement of the windows and the rebuilding of the roof and tower. |
