Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology in November 2018 during building works on land behind Uffculme Road, Willand, Devon. The site lies within an area of high prehistoric archaeological activity. Work undertaken by Exeter Archaeology in 2007 to the west of the site revealed activity of late prehistoric and Roman date, including the remains of a circular ditched feature, possibly a barrow or mortuary enclosure, of early Neolithic origin. In addition, a geophysical survey on land adjacent to the site has identified a further circular ditch and associated features of possible prehistoric date. It was therefore considered possible that archaeological features and/or artefacts might be exposed during the works. A watching brief was maintained during works associated with the construction of a new agricultural building. The area had previously been built-up and levelled to a height of 1.2-1.5m. The excavation of 20 pits, measuring 2m x 1.75m and excavated to a maximum depth of 1.8m were monitored No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were found |
