Abstract: |
South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) was to undertake an archaeological evaluation in advance of a proposed development of the site. The site is located within the historic settlement of Yarnscombe, to the north-west of the parish church. It is situated towards the summit of a steep-sided valley of a tributary of the River Taw at an altitude of c.145 AOD. The evaluation identified a total of 20 archaeological features, including 7 stone filled drains, 5 stone built drains, 4 surfaces, 1 stone-built wall, 1 possible wall robber cut, and 2 modern services. These features were primarily associated with the post-medieval to 19th century occupation and use of the site and its subdivision into a series of smaller plots, with the remains of a former boundary wall and external cobbled yard surfaces. Whilst artefactual evidence suggests that there was medieval activity on the site, much of the site has been disturbed during the 19th and 20th centuries with the demolition of the structures and its conversion into a single plot, and subsequent need for drainage, this was particularly the case to the east of the site. |
