Abstract:
Archaeology were commissioned by The National Trust, to undertake an archaeological watching brief during the construction of the new Bodiam Castle Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Rose Garden, Bodiam, East Sussex (NGR 578376 125443). All deposits and remains on the site that were stratified above the upper weathered alluvium probably related to activity dating from, at the earliest, the later 18th century to the present day. The underlying sedimentary sequence was entirely equivalent to previous observations showing at depth, a peat-rich deposit of Bronze Age date indicating a wooded, infilled meander/oxbow on the margins of the floodplain. There was an unconformity in the sedimentary sequence where the peat was truncated and overlain by an anerobic blue-grey alluvium containing Medieval remains, which then graded into weathered modern floodplain deposits. The abrupt change in sedimentary regime was unexplained at the time of writing but may relate to migration of the meanders, bringing the main river channel close to the floodplain margins. The timing and depth of water at this time, combined with evidence for human activity in the form of artefacts and cereal cultivation indicators, makes this locale a likely candidate for the Medieval flote.
