Abstract: |
This programme of standing building recording undertaken on two barns and an attached semi-circular horse engine house at Pigeon House Farm, Eldersfield, Worcestershire, has identified up to five distinct phases of construction and repair dating back to c.1700. The regularly coursed masonry plinth and the irregular brickwork in the SE elevation of the two storey barn (Barn A) appears to represent the earliest evidence of building activity, closely resembling the construction of the nearby pigeon house which is dated to 1706. An early 18th century date can therefore be assigned to this phase of construction. At some point during the late 18th or early 19th century, the single-storey, semi circular horse engine house (Barn B) was added to the NW corner of Barn A. The horse engine may have been built to power a threshing machine or machinery associated with a cider mill. |
