Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of the footprint of the rain water harvesting tanks and manholes in the south-west area of the site was monitored between 14th February 2012 and 21st September 2015. The earliest evidence of deliberate and concerted land reclamation dates from the early post-medieval period. The earliest buildings on the site date from the late 17th/early 18th century. Horwoods map of 1799 shows the site occupied by a row of terraced houses fronting Gravel Lane (now called Holland Street) with gardens to the rear. The dumped material on which these buildings were founded contains a quantity of industrial waste material including kiln furniture. |
