Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Nick Johnston of English Heritage to carry out an archaeological watching brief during repair works to fencing at Portchester Castle. The purpose of the watching brief was to comply with a condition of the Scheduled Monument Consent. An archaeologist was required to monitor the opening-up work conducted during the site visit. In brief, one fence post had been damaged and the base had rotted in situ. The fence post is located within a line of fencing, set along the north bank of the Roman ditch or moat, to the north of the bastion tower, east of the Keep. No archaeological remains were encountered. |
