Abstract:
South West Archaeology Ltd. was commissioned to undertake a historic building assessment for 1 New Street and the synagogue, Penzance, Cornwall. This work was undertaken in order to determine the significance of the buildings prior to a planning submission. The report has been updated In light of comments issued following this planning submission. The former synagogue and 1 New Street are part of a Grade II listing with the Star Hotel, although until recently (2015) the listing text was vague about which properties were included in the designation. The buildings lie within the conservation area in Penzance, in an area which is crowded with buildings from a range of dates, status and functions. The buildings are sandwiched between the relatively well kept frontages of a small side street and the delivery yard and car park of a supermarket, in a small area which is currently derelict and untidy. The building assessment noted that multiple phases of alteration and changes of use have stripped the buildings of their identities and much of their historic fabric. The floor levels have been significantly raised in places, doorways blocked or forced, with most of the windows altered or replaced and the roof levels raised.
