Abstract:
The results of a walkover survey, archaeological evaluation and rapid building recording carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. at 79 Heavitree Road, Exeter, Devon. The site contains the former City Children's Home which was built in the grounds of the 18th century workhouse and in an area of known archaeological potential with Prehistoric and Roman activity identified in the immediate vicinity. The evaluation identified that the site north of the former Children's Home had been truncated and disturbed by previous phases of construction and demolition. In those areas the natural substrate was sealed by layers of modern (c.2011) made ground, an aggregate probably derived from 20th century structures on the site. To the south, between the former Home and Heavitree Road, historic (early 20th century) levels were sealed by up to 0.8m of made ground. Archaeological features and layers, should they be present in this area, would not be affected by the development and have been left to be preserved in situ.
