Abstract:
A grade II-listed barn and associated farm buildings were recorded in advance of conversion. The barn is an imposing timber-framed and weatherboarded structure of six bays on a north-south axis with a main span of 21 m in length by 6.7 m in total width (69 ft by 22 ft). Formerly thatched, as shown in a watercolour of 1898, it is now roofed with corrugated iron. When originally built in the late-16th century the barn contained only five bays with a central entrance and a gabled porch to the west, but a major remodelling in the early-17th century saw the addition of a rear (eastern) aisle together with a second porch opposite the first and a sixth bay to the south. The southern end of the western wall was also provided with an aisle in the 18th century, but this did not continue north of the porch. The fine 16th century clasped-purlin roof survives intact, complete with all wind braces, but of the original close-studded walls only the northern gable and two bays of the western elevation remain in situ. The roof-plates (largely converted into arcade-plates) contain edge-halved-and-bridled scarf joints with splayed abutments. A single-storied workshop to the north of the barn is an early-17th century stable of two bays on an east-west axis with evidence of a central cross-entry, three diamond-mullion windows and a hay loft in the eastern bay. It extended to 9.2 m in length by 5.2 m in overall width (30 ft by 17 ft) and rose to 2.75 m (9ft) at its roof-plates. This building was extended by one bay in the mid-17th century and has been re-roofed and much altered but still represents a rare survival. The site also contains an 18th century cart lodge and a timber-framed farmhouse of the same period.
