Abstract:
Archaeology South-East was commissioned by the Focus Consultants to undertake an archaeological evaluation at Mountview Performing Arts Academy, Peckham Hill Street, Peckham London Borough of Southwark, between the 3rd and 6th of April, 2017. The work was comprised of the excavation of five evaluation trenches (3x 20m by 1.80m at base, and 2x 10m by 1.80m at base). The evaluation revealed natural deposits between 4.27m and 4.87m AOD. A single cut feature, ditch [1/015] was observed in Trench 1 and had a post-medieval date. This was found underneath the intact subsoil that was observed in trenches 1, 3 and 4 indicating that there is the potential for survival in these areas. Trenches 2 and 5 identified large concrete beams and foundations between 4.64m and 4.97m AOD, which have been tentatively identified as corresponding to the 'Eagle Wharf' structure first observed on mid-20th century ordnance survey maps. Further ground clearance work by the principal contractor showed that the beams in trenches 2 and 5 probably correspond to the eastern extent of these 20th century structures. It is therefore possible that more archaeology may survive between the eastern extents of trenches 2 and 5 and the western extents of trenches 1, 3 and 4.It is also possible that, if the subsoil remains intact, there is further survival to the east of Trench 1 and south of Trench 3.
