Abstract: |
PCAS Archaeology Ltd. was commissioned by Mr and Mrs G McGuire to undertake a scheme of archaeological monitoring and recording during the groundworks for a new detached dwelling on land adjacent to 87a, High Street Broughton. Archaeological monitoring of the house plot identified a small number of features; a 1st-2nd century Roman pit (cut into an earlier undated pit), an 18th century ditch and a modern ditch. A sherd of pottery and a Roman tile from the modern ditch confirms low intensity Roman activity, although the focus of this activity is likely to have been further to the west, adjacent to Ermine Street. Historic mapping shows the Church of St. Mary lies at the west end of the post-medieval village, with the Site lying on the periphery of the settlement area in the medieval and post-medieval periods. |
