Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief at Hall Gardens, Hickleton, Doncaster. The proposals comprise the alteration of a late 20th century stable block for a residential dwelling which has been granted conditional planning permission (12/03106/FUL). In all excavation areas it was found that recently disturbed made-ground overlaid the natural sandy clay geology. No archaeological features or significant finds were encountered. The foundations of the northern wall of the kitchen garden were exposed during the ground works, which consisted of up to four courses of hewn Magnesian limestone blocks. Furthermore, sockets of floor joists were identified above the foundation which appear to relate to the floor of a former glass house of the first quarter of the 20th century. Whilst the excavated areas were found to be archaeologically sterile it is significant that no evidence of building (other than the standing garden walls) was located. |
