Abstract:
Archaeology South-East (ASE) was commissioned by CgMs Consulting to undertake an archaeological evaluation in advance of redevelopment on four separate plots of land forming three development sites situated off Rose Lane, Marks Gate, Ilford. Ten evaluation trenches were excavated across three of the plots, with four trenches located in an area of garages aborted with the consent of the EH GLAAS monitoring officer due to access restrictions coupled with the evident degree of truncation seen across an adjacent area. A lack of subsoil across all evaluated areas suggests that these plots may have been previously stripped down to the geological horizon in the recent past, possibly during the construction of the existing housing estate and local amenities, while the discovery of a layer of imported modern material in one of the evaluation areas add further credence to the suggestion that this part of the site has previously been subject to ground levelling and remodelling works. The absence of virtually any archaeological remains across all of the investigated areas, with the exception of one shallow, irregular pit identified to the rear of St Marks, suggests that the site has not been extensively occupied or exploited until the development of Marks Gate in the 20th century or, alternatively, that any archaeological remains that were present were destroyed during the construction of the existing housing estate. The results of the evaluation suggest that the proposed development will have no impact upon the archaeological record.
