Abstract:
Monitoring and rescue excavation at The Hold Ipswich, ahead of the construction of a new Record Office on Fore Street. Remains of medieval waste pits and dark earth deposits, perhaps extra-mural burgage plots, were recorded with later 16th - 18th century pits, cellars, beam slot, maltings and later Victorian remains. The medieval plots represent the easternmost recorded medieval occupation of Fore Street and St Clement's parish and may have been set out as planned development in the 12th-14th centuries. The later medieval/post medieval finds assemblage suggests a change from a poorer agricultural suburb towards more affluent occupants which may have been related to the development of a series of quay fronts to the southwest, with both finds and documentary evidence suggesting merchant houses.
