Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in January 2019 at Land South of Blandford Hill, Milborne St. Andrew, Dorset. Forty six trenches along with six geotechnical pits were excavated, of which thirty eight trenches contained archaeological features. Fifteen trenches were repositioned with the permission of the County Archaeologist, due underground and overhead services and other restrictions. Four Bronze Age ring ditches were identified, along with associated internal and external pits. A double ring ditch to the west within Trench 27 contained a central cremation burial, whilst the ring ditch to the south within Trench 15 contained a possible internal disturbed burial. These features correspond with the results of the geophysical survey. In the wider site a series of pits, also dating to the Bronze Age, were recorded with two such features, potentially containing, crouched burials. Later prehistoric ditch activity was located to the west of the site, along with multiple undated field systems, and some evidence of medieval and post-medieval activity within the site. There was no evidence of Iron Age or Roman activity across the site, despite the close proximity to known Roman activity to the north of the site.
