Abstract: |
Between December 2018 and July 2019 KDK Archaeology Ltd carried out Historic Building Recording and a Historic Building and Archaeological Watching Brief of Wellwick House. Originally constructed c.1616 for Sir Thomas Brudenell who later became the Earl of Cardigan andmostly built of flint and rubble with brick dressings, the main elevation was later refaced in brickwork. Archaeological investigations in the excavations for a swimming pool and a large pond documented extensive made-ground, and adjacent to the main house, the potential remains of a late 18th century, or later, brick wall. The absence of artefacts/structures pre-dating the 17th/18th centuries is probably a consequence of locally comprehensive soil truncation and landscaping pre- and post-dating the construction of Wellwick House. |
