Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology for the client in August 2020 on works associated with the construction of a new agricultural building on land at Lower Seavington Farm, Stockland, Devon. The site lies in an area of archaeological potential to the south of the Grade II* Listed Higher Seavington House, a 16th or early 17th century farmhouse. In addition, the site is located in an area where a large number of prehistoric findspots of flint tools have been recovered. A watching brief was maintained during the excavation of the foundations for the outbuilding, totalling c.39.3m in length, 0.8m wide and 0.45m deep. In addition, seven pits, each 1.3m long, 0.8m wide and 1.2m deep, were excavated along the long edge of the building. The work revealed a simple deposit sequence consisting of a 0.3m thick topsoil above a clay natural subsoil across the whole site. Three sherds of 19th-20th century industrial whitewares and a single sherd of 18th-19th century South Somerset coarseware were recovered. Despite examination of the spoil heaps no flints or other artefacts were found.
