Abstract:
The results of a heritage assessment carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for the site of the former East Yelland Power Station, Yelland, Fremington, Devon. The site is located between the historic towns of Barnstaple and Bideford off the Tarka Trail, the line of the former North Devon Railway. This work was undertaken in support of a planning application. The site was enclosed in the 19th century, remaining as agricultural land until the 1950s when the East Yelland Power Station was constructed; and decommissioned in 1984. Subsequent demolition and decay has seen the majority of the structures being removed or fall into disrepair, the site inspection identifying that only the jetty, switch-house and one of the pump-houses survive as upstanding structures; the boiler- and turbine-house as basement levels; and the remainder of the buildings only as concrete footprints. There are no anticipated hydrographic impacts or changes which will be caused by the proposed developments, and there will be no direct impacts upon the scheduled stone row.
