Abstract: |
In the spring of 2020 two archaeological evaluation trenches were cut to investigate specific parts of Archcliffe Fort ahead of the proposed new building works. Trench 1, adjacent to the site of a concrete building platform revealed little of consequence and established that a visible mound was nothing more than a dump of twentieth century soils. Trench 2, however, produced some unexpected results and at a depth of 1.54m revealed the top of a buried brick wall of nineteenth century date. This apparently formed part of a cellar relating to a lost building within the fort. |
