Abstract: |
In November 2017 Historic Building Appraisal was undertaken of The Dolphin Inn, Leighton Road, Stoke Hammond, in order to inform a development proposal for the construction of new dwellings on the site. The site was first documented in 1695 when two cottages stood on the site but it is not until c.1881 that the Dolphin Inn is known to have been established. Although the rear elevation clearly shows the building was originally two cottages, there is insufficient evidence to suggest that these are the ones described in the late 17th century document. The building has been considerably altered and modernised since being converted to a public house and very little historic fabric predating the late Victorian period survives. The development proposals, which include the demolition and rebuilding of the present structure on the same footprint in much the same style and erecting three houses in the car park to the rear, are sympathetic to the architectural and historical narrative of the existing building as well as the setting of the site. |
