Abstract:
Historic Building: Between June 2016 and October 2017 KDK Archaeology Ltd carried out Historic Building Recording and a Historic Building Watching Brief of The Old Town Hall, St Albans, Hertfordshire The Old Town hall is a Grade II* building, designed by George Smith and completed in 1831. Built on the site of the medieval moot hall, which was superseded by almshouses in 1605, The Old Town Hall provided an imposing venue for the corporation and justices of St Albans to attend to the civic and judicial needs of the district. Latterly, however, the building has been used as a coffee shop, Tourist Information Centre and to house the library of the St Albans and Hertfordshire Architectural and Archaeological Society. Occasional use was also made of other parts of the building. The conversion to a museum and gallery will redefine the role of the building and reassert its significance within the town. Observation and Recording and Strip Map and Record: During the first half of 2017 KDK Archaeology Ltd carried out a mixed programme of Observation and Recording and Strip, Map and Record excavation in relation to the construction works at The Old Town Hall, St Albans. The development comprised the conversion of the current building into a museum including the construction of a basement galley.
