Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was mounted on the excavation of a new electricity power cable trench within the parish churchyard. No archaeological activity was identified on this site and there were no finds. Part of the foundations of the West Tower of the church along with those of the north-western buttress were exposed by the excavation of this trench. The foundations at the West Tower consisted of a single basal course of stone ashlars. The exposed foundation of the north western buttress was composed of this single basal course of stone ashlars which was above a stepped foundation offset composed of two courses of brick stretchers. Elsewhere the excavation of this trench extended through a relatively shallow topsoil and a churchyard pathway, both of which were above a graveyard soil horizon. Neither horizon yielded fragments of any disarticulated human bone. |
