Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology for Devon County Council in July 2020 on remedial works to Ideford Mill Bridge,a grade II listed structure, following extensive damage to the western wing wall during winter flooding. A watching brief was maintained during excavations associated with the rebuilding of the wingwall and the installation of a new concrete apron. The works entailed the excavation of an area approximately 4m long, 2m wide and to a maximum depth of 3.5m. The works revealed evidence for an earlier palaeochannel and a realignment of the bridleway in response to the continued erosion of the riverbank sometime in the mid-19th century. |
