Abstract:
Phase 1 of archaeological evaluation trenching was undertaken by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) at the request of Park Leisure 2000 Ltd. (the Client) prior to the development of the site as holiday accommodation at Pentire Holiday Park, Kilkhampton, Cornwall. The work was carried out by S. Walls on 7th October 2019 in accordance with a WSI (Boyd 2019) drawn up in consultation with the Local Planning Authority (LPA). The site is located within a series of agricultural fields forming part of, and to the west of the Pentire Holiday Park to the west-south-west of the village of Kilkhampton, a village on the A39. The site slopes down from c.155m AOD in the south-east to c.95m AOD to the north-west and is partially defined by water courses along its north-east and south-west boundaries. The soils of this area are the well-drained fine loamy soils of the Neath Association (SSEW 1983), overlying the mudstones and siltstones of the Bude Formation (BGS 2019). Kilkhampton was a pre-Domesday manor first recorded in 839AD, recorded at Domesday as Chilchetone. The Scheduled Monument of a Norman motte and bailey (SAM1003079) is located to the north of the site; the site itself sitting within a largely medieval agricultural landscape though with elements of an earlier prehistoric landscape largely identified to the south. The Cornwall historic landscape characterisation (HLC) shows the site as within medieval farmland. Previous desk-based assessment and heritage impact assessment (Bampton and Balmond 2018) identified the historic context of the site; and geophysical survey (Bonvoisin 2019) identified a series of features likely to represent elements of phases of previous field systems.
