Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by National Grid IFA2 Limited to undertake an archaeological assessment of geophysical data acquired over the Interconnexion France-Angleterre 2 cable development. The assessment data comprised sidescan sonar, magnetometer, gradiometer and multibeam echosounder datasets acquired by Next Geosolutions and MMT. The geophysical data were assessed to identify any seabed features of archaeological potential within the study area. The results of subsequent ROV/diver assessments have not been included. In the high voltage direct current (HVDC) nearshore study area, a total of 478 anomalies were identified as being of possible archaeological interest. Of these, 477 were assigned an A2 archaeological potential rating and one was assigned an A3 archaeological discrimination being a historic record of possible archaeological interest with no corresponding geophysical anomaly. In the high voltage direct current (HVDC) offshore study area, a total of 215 anomalies were identified as being of possible archaeological interest, all of which have been assigned an A2 archaeological potential rating. Three Archaeological Exclusion Zones from previous assessments have been retained and reviewed using the most recent data, and in two cases were reduced in size. The approximate area covered by the geophysical data archaeological assessment is 110 km by 0.25 km.
