Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was mounted on the groundworks for a new residential dwelling (Plot 2). The monitored groundworks consisted of the mechanical excavation of the foundations. No archaeological activity was identified on this site and there were no finds. To the immediate north of the new build area, a modern pond had been excavated. The upcast from this excavation had then be spread over the subsequent new build area, such that is covered the northernmost two thirds of this area. The site deposit sequence in this area of the site thus consisted of this redeposited upcast horizon, a buried topsoil horizon, which was relatively shallow, and two underlying natural horizons. To the south, the site deposit sequence here comprised the topsoil (buried) soil horizon and the two underlying natural horizons. The shallow nature of this topsoil (buried) soil horizon suggested that this site has never been under the plough, but had been used for pastoral purposes over a long period of time. |
