Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology in June 2020 on works associated with the construction of a new extension on land at Cleave Cottage, Lustleigh, Devon. The site lies in an area of archaeological potential within the historic farmstead of Hammerslake. Hammerslake Farm is an undesignated heritage asset and is shown for the first time on the mid-19th century tithe map. However, it dates to at least the early 19th century and has the potential to be older. A watching brief was maintained during the excavation of the foundations for the extension. The works entailed the excavation of foundation trenches totalling c.20m in length, 1m wide and 0.75m deep, revealing a simple deposit sequence extending across the whole site. A small collection of archaeological material, totalling 86 sherds and consisting largely of post-medieval and modern pottery, were recovered from the excavations. |
