Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology in October 2020 on works associated with the installation of additional drainage and soakaway measures alongside Marldon Road, Ipplepen, Devon. A watching brief was maintained during excavations associated with the creation of a temporary access and working area. The works entailed the excavation of an area approximately 205m long and 3m wide to a maximum depth of 0.3m. The works revealed a simple deposit sequence extending across the whole site. A small collection of archaeological material was recovered from the topsoil, consisting of 17 sherds of 19th and early 20th centuries industrial whitewares. In conjunction with the groundworks a metal detecting survey of the route and spoil heap was also carried out. This recovered a large number of ferrous objects, associated with post-medieval farming of the area, and a single cast lead probable 'palm guard'. |
