Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology in June 2021 on land at The Smithy, Dainton, Devon. A watching brief was maintained during works associated with the construction of two holiday pods and associated service trenching. The work involved the excavation of a trench approximately 45m long, 0.3m wide and c.0.7m deep and an area of terracing approximately 18m long and 18m wide and excavated to a maximum depth of 0.15m. In addition, a 4.5m long, 3.5m wide and 1.4m deep soakaway was also monitored at the northeastern end of the development. The work exposed a simple deposit sequence and no deposits, features or dating evidence indicative of archaeological activity was found. The lack of pottery and other artefacts from the site, despite examination of spoil heaps, further indicates that the site is archaeologically sterile. |
