Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology in August 2021 on land to the north of Oakford Farm, Shirwell, Devon. An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the start of groundworks. Three trenches measuring 54 metres in total and 1.6m wide, were excavated to a maximum depth of 0.4m. The trenches revealed a uniform deposit sequence consisting of a yellow grey silty clay natural subsoil. This was sealed underneath a 0.46m thick mid yellowish brown silty clay topsoil. No deposits, features or dating evidence indicative of archaeological activity was found. The lack of pottery and other artefacts from the site, despite examination of spoil heaps, further indicates that the site is archaeologically sterile. |
