Abstract: |
Fairfield Cottage seems to have originated as a late 17th-century building, possibly not intended for residential use, which was converted during the 1840s for use as the service range of a large, adjoining farmhouse, now a separate property. There are few overtly dateable features in the house and the replacement of the roof in the 19th century has removed much evidence for the original structure. There is some possibility that the house may have originated as a three room and cross passage house, of which all except the service end, was either demolished or completely remodelled in the 1840s when Fairfield House, the adjoining property, was rebuilt. The rear range appears to have been part of an historic linhay and there are further agricultural buildings in front of the cottage towards the street. |
