Abstract:
The results of a historic building assessment and recording carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a building known as 'The Stables', at Porthill, Northam, Torridge in advance of an application for conversion to a dwelling. The stables is a complex L-shaped building of mixed timber boarded and stone rubble build, rendered on some elevations, under a slate roof. It currents presents as a 19th century Stables block, on a north-south alignment, with an attached coach house, adapted into a garage and workshop. It is likely that the building is in fact much earlier and dates to the origins of the Estate as an 18th century tobacco merchant's residence; the building in fact being a secure warehouse, adjacent to the Bideford-Appledore road. The portion of the building which survives is substantially complete structurally, with a generous number of fittings allowing for identification of function, flow of processes and hierarchy of spaces. In its current dilapidated state it is not expected to survive long-term, without intervention and has clearly suffered from some incidents of anti-social behaviour. A conversion to a dwelling, of sympathetic character would allow for the sustainable repurposing and retention of this building for the future.
