Abstract: |
This report comprises an archaeological assessment which has been compiled to accompany a planning application by English Heritage to improve the visitor facilities at Chesters Roman fort. The assessment identifies cultural heritage constraints within and adjacent to the area of the proposed new visitor centre and makes recommendations regarding the work required to mitigate the scheme's impact. The assessment concludes that the proposed development will impact severely on any archaeological features or deposits within its footprint, especially given the shallow soil cover over the remains of the fort and its environs. The visual impact on the fort will be minimal, but the visual impact on the museum will be substantial. Recommendations made by the assessment include evaluation in the form of trial trenching, archaeological examination of the strip revealed by the removal of an existing path and conscientious design of new features to have minimal impact on potential archaeological features. |
