Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by RPS Planning and Development to create an historic building record of a small complex of former farm buildings located at Steart Farm, Bucks Cross, Bideford, Devon. Steart Farmhouse is Grade II listed and described as late 18th - early 19th century in date with mid-19th century extension. Conditional planning permission and listed building consent was granted following appeal for the construction of a school on the site to include new buildings, associated car parking and landscaping. Buildings 2 and 3 will be stabilised and retained (along with the farmhouse), buildings 4 and 8 will be demolished. A programme of historic building recording prior to construction was required through conditions attached to the planning and listed building consents. The associated farm buildings are regarded as curtilage listed. The programme of building recording included documentary, cartographic, photographic and digital survey which was undertaken between 16th November and 1st December 2016. All the buildings were photographed and surveyed to Historic England Level 4 standard.
