Abstract:
The evaluation has been successful in meeting its aims. Identified archaeological structures show good correlation with historic mapping, particularly the Ordnance Survey town plan of 1890. Further structures have been identified which do not appear on historic maps, including internal divisions and early 20th-century development in Trench 5. The earliest archaeological remains on site comprise buried soils in Trenches 2 and 5 likely related to the mid-19th century use of the Site as allotment gardens. A drain and soakaway in Trench 8 may also date from this period or may be older. Some preservation of the late 19th century St. Matthias' church in Trench 2 was demonstrated, although services had impacted the remains. Structures relating to the late 19th century Yorkshire Wire Rope Works were present in Trenches 4 and 5, with contemporary remains of the Gilcar File Works in Trench 8 and residential structures in Trench 9. Trench 9 may contain two phases of residential development. Later development in Trench 5 is of uncertain date and some may relate to reconstruction after the site was bombed during the blitz in the 1940s. Possible reuse of bricks and alignment of new walls with respect to older structures may represent cost and time saving construction techniques in the post-war economy. Post-war redevelopment comprised the construction of the Composite Steel Works. In common with the results of the previously excavated Trench 1 (Wessex Archaeology 2010), Trenches 3, 6 and 7 had been heavily truncated, probably during the construction of a late-20th century car showroom and contained no significant archaeological structures, features, deposits or artefacts. This suggests that any archaeological remains in the area of the Buffalo Horn Works, the southern range of the Yorkshire Wire Rope Works and a mapped yard area of unknown purpose have been removed by previous development.
