Abstract:
A number of structures were identified during the excavation that belong to the original Bleaklow Hall and an associated complex of agricultural farm buildings that grew up alongside the hall. A well preserved stone-walled and staircase-accessed cellar with a mostly intact stone floor, five storage alcoves, springers for an arched ceiling and the truncated remains of partition walls and internal buttresses represented the best preserved features of the hall. Further north the foundation brick courses of part of the ground floor were also identified, with an entrance feature aligning with a kerb which separated the house from a cobbled access road that ran east-west along the back of the site. The agricultural building to the east aligns well with the footprint of a structure depicted on 19th century maps of the site, and whilst only the foundation stone courses of the building have survived it is possible to trace usage of the structure through to its demolition in the mid-20th century. Drainage features that run between the agricultural remains and the road to the north suggest that the majority of the structures and surfaces are contemporary, and along with the Hall represent a site that was both residential and industrial in nature.
