Abstract: |
This project comprised the archaeological monitoring of the groundworks for two new apartment blocks along with associated services. The ground reduction for the two new apartment blocks created two open areas within which a large number of archaeological features were excavated and recorded. These excavations identified settlement activity and finds dating from the Saxo-Norman period through to the 20th century. The archaeological features recorded included one north-south orientated boundary ditch, several east-west orientated linear gullies, several pits and a large number of postholes. These archaeological features were all sealed by a modern topsoil horizon, with the bulk being cut into an underlying and undated buried ploughsoil and natural subsoil horizons. The remaining groundworks comprising the archaeological monitoring of two service trenches identified a series of undated made ground deposits. |
