Abstract: |
In February 2019, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation at the Harlequins Centre, Paul Street, Exeter, Devon. A total of two trenches were excavated within the site. The evaluation recorded only one cut feature, an apparently postmedieval/ modern pit or ditch filled with redeposited material from the Roman city wall rampart (the city wall lay to the immediate north-west of the evaluation trenches). A deep layer of apparently redeposited Roman rampart material was recorded in the southwestern part of the site. No clearly in situ deposits/features dating to the medieval period or earlier were recorded. Subsequent to these works, a programme of Ground Investigation (GI) works was undertaken at the site, which the second report briefly summarises. |
