Abstract:
Archaeology South-East was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd. to undertake an archaeological evaluation on land to the east of Shepham Lane, Polegate, East Sussex (The Mill Development). Extension of some of the trenches and the mechanical stripping of two Mitigation Areas allowed the examination of a range of archaeological deposits in advance of development. A limited assemblage of residual struck flints dating from the Mesolithic to the Early Bronze Age were recovered from the overburden and from a limited number of archaeological features. Only a single feature was datable to the Late Iron Age/Romano-British period. The majority of datable features identified at the current site could be dated to the medieval period, apparently forming a periodically realigned field system in use from the Saxo-Norman period through to the late 13th century. Only limited evidence of post-medieval activity was uncovered during the current project, often in the form of truncation of earlier archaeological features apparently from clearance of trees and bushes. It is envisaged that the results of the archaeological work from the current site and other local excavations will be assimilated to provide a detailed chronological narrative of the sequence of human activity in the Dittons Road/Shepham Lane area of Polegate. It is suggested this work will be submitted for publication in a future volume of the Sussex Archaeological Collections.
